Vom Bund und von der Altstadt sind es nur
wenige Stationen mit der Metro-Linie 10, doch
es ist eine Reise in eine andere Welt. Wer in
Xintiandi oder Shaanxi South Road aussteigt,
wird ein Viertel entdecken mit ruhigen
Plantanenalleen, mit kleinen Gassen, in denen
schicke Boutiquen neben Vintage-Läden,
trendige Bars und Cafés neben Garküchen
und Concept-Stores neben Trödelläden zu
finden sind und wo die Bewohner entspannt
ihre Wäsche und ihre Vogelkäfige auf die
Straße hängen. Zwischen den 1850er-Jahren
und dem Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkriegs
war hier die französische Konzession, hier
tummelten sich Abenteurer, Geschäftsleute,
Emigranten, Gangster, Künstler, heute ist es
ein ruhiges Viertel abseits der Hektik, die
das Leben im Rest Shanghais bestimmt. ●
From the Bund and the Old City, it’s just a few
stations on Metro Line 10. But it’s a journey
to another world. Jump off at Xintiandi or
Shaanxi South Road, and you suddenly find
yourself in a district of quiet alleyways lined
with plane trees, small streets with chic
boutiques alongside vintage shops, trendy
bars and cafés next to cookshops, concept
stores and junk shops, with locals relaxing
and hanging their washing and birdcages
out on the street. Between the 1850s and
the outbreak of the Second World War, this
was the French Concession, home to bustling
crowds of adventurers, businesspeople,
emigrants, gangsters and artists. Today
it’s a quiet district, far removed from the
hustle and bustle that defines life
elsewhere in Shanghai. ●
