Vom neuen Whitney Museum of American Art und
von der High Line, den beiden Publikumsmagneten
in Downtown Manhattan, ist es nur wenige Schritte
zum Wallsé und zum Upholstery Store (kg-ny.com),
dem Sterne-Lokal und der neuen Weinbar des
österreichischen Küchenchefs und Gastronomen
Kurt Gutenbrunner. Hier kann man den Tag
wunderbar ausklingen lassen. Die New Yorker
lieben jedoch nicht nur die Küche, sondern
auch den Kunstsinn Gutenbrunners.
Und so hat einer der Stammgäste, der
Künstler und Filmemacher Julian
Schnabel, den Chef porträtiert.
Das Bild hängt nun neben
Kunstwerken von Albert Oehlen.
Auf den Tisch kommt, was die
Biobauern aus der Umgebung
am Markt verkaufen – oder die
Fischer an Land bringen: Heilbutt
mit Gurke, Dill und Pfifferlingen.
Rehbackerl mit Kohlsprossen
und Äpfeln, Maronisuppe.
Zum Dessert: Salzburger Nockerln.

From the Whitney Museum of American Art
and the High Line, Downtown Manhattan’s two
most magnetic attractions of the moment, it’s
just moments to Wallsé and Upholstery Store
(kg-ny.com), the award-winning eatery and new
wine bar of Austrian chef and gastronome Kurt
Gutenbrunner. If you want to while away the day
in style, both are wonderful spots to do so. New
Yorkers don’t just love Gutenbrunner’s feeling for
food, however; they’re also flocking to enjoy his
artistic sensibilities. One of the regulars here,
artist and filmmaker Julian Schnabel,
has even painted a portrait of the
chef, which now hangs in amongst
the other works of art by Albert
Oehlen. What you’re eating is
what the organic farmers from
the region are growing, or local
fishermen are landing: halibut
with gherkin, dill with chanterelles,
venison with Brussels sprouts
and apples, chestnut soup. For
dessert: Salzburg dumplings.
