identified that there is a low uptake in their use, reasons being
a lack of knowledge and confidence in their use as well as
insufficient organisational support.
In Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust these
concerns needed to be addressed locally, a service development
initiative enabled this. As the project formed part of service
improvement, no ethical approval was required.
A service review was conducted in all areas to understand
current practice and use of routine outcome measures. Few
standardised measures were being used, none consistently. A
review of the literature identified measures to adopt. Discussion
with representatives from all clinical areas led to Goal Attainment
Scale (GAS)-light being chosen (Turner-Stokes 2009).
GAS-light is sensitive enough to capture the aims of the
intervention and the goals that are relevant to the person, this
is in contrast to routinely collected measures such as the Health
of the Nation Outcome Scale (Wing et al 1998) where item 10,
problems with activities of daily living, may not capture change
based on occupational therapy interventions.
From an organisational view the measure was embedded within
the electronic health care records (EHCR) whilst from a clinical
position training was delivered to support its use. This entailed
sessions on the measure itself, goal setting and EHCR guidance.
Outcomes of the review are tentative clinicians have welcomed
the change and are keen to demonstrate the difference that
they make through collaborative, person centred occupationally
focussed interventions. Having data available to analyse will
enable focus to be maintained on being accountable for
providing a quality service.
Dispelling the myths of the private sector:
developing an occupational therapy service
Howard K 1, 2 , Cygnet Hospital Wyke 1 , Cygnet Lodge
Brighouse 2
Posters
It has been widely documented that the NHS is increasingly
becoming reliant on resources within private sector psychiatry
(BMJ 2014). Cygnet Hospital Wyke and Cygnet Lodge Brighouse
have responded to this challenge by offering acute, PICU, older
adult and community rehabilitation inpatient services to males.
The focus of this session is to explore what it is like to work as
a Lead Occupational Therapist in this private setting and the
processes involved in establishing an effective service aimed at
meeting the occupational needs of this diverse client group.
The poster is aimed at Occupational Therapists who are
working in, or would like to be more involved in a leadership
role. The structure and content of the occupational therapy
service offered at Cygnet Hospital Wyke and Cygnet Lodge
Brighouse will be showcased and focus placed on the key role
Occupational Therapists can have in assessing and advocating
for environmental change within psychiatric settings using the
Residential Environment Impact Scale (Fisher, G. et al 2014).
Unpicking occupational balance: a systematic
Occupational balance is described as a central concept of
occupational therapy since Meyer recommended a balance
in 1922 (Westhorpe 2003). Despite its relevance to achieving
