2. Provide ongo<strong>in</strong>g education <strong>and</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g: Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programmes for healthcare staff should<br />

<strong>in</strong>clude issues relat<strong>in</strong>g to loss, grief <strong>and</strong> bereavement. Organisations should ensure that<br />

healthcare staff are aware of the stresses, stra<strong>in</strong>s <strong>and</strong> also the opportunities for personal<br />

growth which are <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g with people at the end of their lives. Help<strong>in</strong>g<br />

healthcare staff to develop cop<strong>in</strong>g strategies <strong>and</strong> strategies for self-care should also be a<br />

core part of any educational programmes. This should beg<strong>in</strong> from an employee’s po<strong>in</strong>t of<br />

entry <strong>in</strong>to a workplace <strong>and</strong> form part of their job orientation programme. Hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

on grief <strong>and</strong> bereavement for healthcare staff which <strong>in</strong>cludes signpost<strong>in</strong>g for family support<br />

has been reported to be useful by healthcare staff.<br />

1. The Irish Hospice Foundation has created a series of resources <strong>and</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g programmes for<br />

organisations <strong>and</strong> healthcare staff to help them underst<strong>and</strong> grief, the impact it has on the<br />

bereaved <strong>and</strong> their colleagues <strong>and</strong> ways <strong>in</strong> which they can be positively supported. These are<br />

2. The Irish Hospice Foundation produced a series of Prompts for Good Practice <strong>and</strong> ‘Just <strong>in</strong><br />

Time Guidance’. One of these is called ‘Car<strong>in</strong>g For yourself <strong>in</strong> end-of-life care work. This is<br />
