Erythromycin is a bacteriostatic drug. Bacteriostatic drugs inhibit<br />

reproduction of <strong>the</strong> bacteria by blocking ribosomal formation of proteins.<br />

Penicillins are bactericidal. Bactericidal antibiotics kill bacteria by cell wall<br />

inhibition.<br />

Basic Science Correlate<br />

Factors II, VII, IX, and X are vitamin K–dependent clotting factors. Proteins<br />

C and S are vitamin K–dependent anticoagulants. Vitamin K adds a carboxyl<br />

group onto <strong>the</strong> glutamic acid on <strong>the</strong>se factors. Protein C inhibits factor V.<br />
