Blooms
Claire Cowling, of Thrive Floristry,
talks all things flowers
What trends have you seen emerging
so far this year?
Lots of our weddings have been very
natural, informal and rustic in style, with
gorgeous country garden flowers such as
garden Roses, Astrantia, Campanula and
Hydrangea. There have been round tied
posies and longer flowing shower
bouquets too.
What do you predict will be
popular next?
Carrying on with the country themes
and styles, natural, intricate and delicate
bouquets, along with compact designs that
feature more ‘blousy’ flowers, plus more
technically styled designs, which are perfect
for a bride looking for something totally
unique.
Which flowers are best for
which seasons?
Nature produces the most exquisite
selection of blooms in their natural seasons,
and as a florist, it’s so nice to embrace
this. spring: Narcissi, Tulips, Fritillaria
and Hyacinth; summer: blousy Roses,
Hydrangea and Peony, teamed with delicate
Astrantia; autumn: beautiful berries, Dahlia,
Crocosmia; winter: Anemone, Ranunculus,
cones and winter foliages.
What’s best if you’re on a budget?
Keep it simple. Flowers arranged informally
in jugs and jars can look really cute. Budgetwise,
you can spend a few hundred pounds,
or many thousands. At Thrive, we always
suggest checking out your local florists’
price lists, writing out a list of the designs
you’d like and seeing what you can afford.
Think about the style too - compact designs
will be much more expensive than loose and
informal designs. Make your florist aware of
the style you’d prefer and the budget your
aiming for, and they will suggest the best
designs for you.
What are your top tips for when
people are choosing a colour scheme
of flower?
Pinterest is great - it helps build a reference
library of designs, styles and colour schemes
- so useful to show to your florist. A true
professional will be able to suggest the
perfect flowers to match or compliment
your colour scheme and style, plus those
that are in season.
Which are best for pressing?
Roses! Spray roses are perfect for both
drying yourself and professionally. At Thrive
we work closely with a company that can
freeze-dry your bouquet - a process that
works for a huge array of materials. We’ve
begun creating the cutest products in
house too: a beautiful, stylised sketch of a
bride carrying a miniature version of your
bouquet, encased in glass.
Do you suggest a complementing
look throughout?
We love to carry the same flowers and
colour schemes throughout; right from
the bridal bouquets and buttonholes to
church decorations and venue flowers - it
looks gorgeous, plus it enables you to place
designs in the church, then to move them
to your reception venue. This is something
our expert team at Thrive can do for you,
to take all of the stress out of it and let you
focus completely on your special day and
enjoying every moment.
