Independent Newmarket
From shopping to hotels, restaurants,
listed buildings and of course the
famous Newmarket Racecourses.
Newmarket is known as The Home
of Horseracing and this year they’re
celebrating an impressive 350 years
of British racing heritage. Not only
is the town home to a large expanse
of horseracing stakeholders, there
are also an abundance of other
independent businesses.
“Newmarket is a fabulous place to
visit. It is the accepted “Home of
Horseracing” in the UK and visitors
can watch the horses working on the
gallops prior to browsing around the
bustling town centre, stopping for
coffee or lunch in one of the many
cafes or restaurants. The new National
Horseracing Museum and Heritage
Centre opens this autumn which is
a multi-million pound development
featuring, not only the best sporting
art in the country, but will also give the
public a chance to get up close to live
racehorses and see displays on its new
four-acre site behind the High Street.
1. Powters
Powters famous Newmarket sausage was born in 1881 and today remains as a familyrun
business, now in their 5th generation. Alongside their wide variety of sausages, this
independent butchers also supply many other local and regional speciality foods and free
range meats. “There are many reasons why people still enjoy shopping at independent
retailers like Powters. For one thing, they appreciate the personal service and advice our
skilled butchers can give; whether it’s about which cuts are most suitable or how to cook
them. Not surprising when you consider that we have been butchers and sausage makers
in the town since the 1880’s!
Our position as makers of the original Newmarket Sausage, and the authenticity of our
unique product, is guaranteed by EU and UK Protected Food Name status. It is one of
only 70 such high quality traditional foods in the whole of the UK, of which only two are
sausages!” Grant Powter, Owner and Managing Director, tells us.
The ever improving retail offering
will hopefully mean that visitors will
make repeated visits to the town.
In addition, Newmarket now has
its own Newmarket BID (Business
Improvement District) which has
some very ambitious plans to improve
the town even further. 2016/17 is
certainly a very exciting time to
visit Newmarket,” Mark Edmonson,
Chief Executive at Edmondson Hall
Solicitors and Board Member at the
Newmarket BID.
