Weekend Winner!
Get set for foodie festivities at Newmarket Open Weekend
After adopting a new two-day format
last year, the 32Red Newmarket Open
Weekend is back, and set to be bigger and
better than ever!
A hit with locals and visitors alike, the Open
Weekend, taking place on the 17th and 18th
September, gives the public a chance to visit
various horseracing establishments, and get
a glimpse of how history is made. There is a
whole host of activities and entertainment
for all the family to enjoy throughout the
town, bringing the community together. The
event will raise vital funds for local charities,
Racing Welfare’s Newmarket Housing
Project and Newmarket Day Centre.
Throughout the whole weekend,
Newmarket Racecourses’ Rowley Mile will
be open from midday, offering afternoon
racing as well as an exciting Food and Drink
Festival that looks to celebrate some of the
best produce East Anglia has to offer.
The Food and Drink Festival will play host
to the ever-popular regional sausage
competition, where expert judges will try the
best sausages in the region all vying for the
top title!
Adding to this year’s festival will be a new
area, The G’s Fresh Demonstration Kitchen,
which will be a foodie haven, offering
cooking demonstrations by local, highly
accomplished chefs. There will be eight full
demonstrations throughout the weekend,
where some of the region’s top chefs will
share some of their tricks of the trade; an
element of the Food and Drink Festival that
any food lover cannot miss.
If you’re attending as a family, there will be a
number of fun activities for all ages including
racing personality show jumping and a
Newmarket vs Lambourn football match,
face painting, bouncy castle, garden games,
swing boats and a puppet show. Don’t forget
- children under 18 go free!
Seven Newmarket trainers, including
William Haggas, George Margarson,
Roger Varian and Gay Kelleway, will take
to the microphone again this year, giving
commentary on the seven race card on
Saturday. Each trainer will be hosting a Just
Giving page so that you can support your
favourite trainer for the local worthy causes!
Other activities throughout the weekend
include, on the Saturday, Warren Hill gallops
open to the public, so you can see some of
the best racehorses in the world training.
This day will also give the public a first-look
at the much anticipated National Heritage
Centre for Horseracing and Sporting Art, a
tour and talk at Europe’s leading Bloodstock
Auctioneers, Tattersalls and guided tours of
the historic member’s club, the Jockey Club
Rooms as well as the National Stud. Other
attractions around the town include one
of the most sought after equine veterinary
practises, Newmarket Equine Hospital, as
well as one of the best centres of excellence
for racing industry training, the British
Racing School, and of course, training yards
opening their doors to the public.
