2016 marks an exciting year for Humphries Weaving in Sudbury as its director, Richard Humphries MBE, celebrates
5 decades in textiles and takes office as the Upper Bailiff of the Worshipful Company of Weavers.
Richard J Humphries was first employed as a design apprentice at Warner & Sons Ltd, Braintree in 1966. It was to
be a life-long career path of textile design and a passion to create the most complex and luxurious fabrics possible.
Richard purchased what machinery he could and set up his own weaving operation at Ashburton Lodge, Sudbury;
the same space that the company trades out of today. Work built steadily and Humphries Weaving reputation grew.
National Trust and Royal commissions soon followed with fabric being woven for the Queen’s Gold State Carriage and
the Green State Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee.
Today Humphries Weaving continues as a leading British manufacturer of custom Jacquard fabrics as Richard
prepares to become the 2016 Upper Bailiff of the Worshipful Company of Weavers, London’s oldest livery established
in 1130. Today the team has a comprehensive knowledge of fabric manufacture, having created sumptuous modern
and heritage work that embodies excellent craftsmanship. Working with the deepest respect for its ancient trade,
Humphries Weaving combines historical knowledge with innovative weaving techniques of today to produce
impeccable fabrics for Royal Palaces, historic properties and luxury private homes.
