3 Alternatives
to Coconut Oil
Whilst coconut oil is all we are
hearing about, we’ve rounded up a
few alternatives with some other
fantastic health benefits…
1. Alfa One 100%
Pure Rice Bran Oil, £2
Suffer with high cholesterol? Then
this one could be your answer.
Rice bran oil is high in phytosterols
which are known for improving
cholesterol levels. It’s got a light
and fairly neutral flavour and is
good for both roasting and frying.
2. Good Oil Hemp Oil, £6
It’s fresh and nutty flavour makes
it an excellent ingredient for
salad dressings or to roast with.
Just one tablespoon of the stuff
means you’ve pretty much hit
your recommended daily dose of
Omega 3 too!
3. Hillfarm Extra Virgin Cold
Pressed Rapeseed Oil, £4.25
Offering a more earthy and slightly
peppery taste, rapeseed oil is also
good for roasting as well as baking
and frying. It has half the amount
of saturated fat as normal olive oil
and is also a rich source of
Vitamin E.
All available from Waitrose.
Paula Ahlberg talks to us this month about back pain...
“You are only as young as
your spine is flexible”
At some time most of us are likely to
experience back pain at some level. Yoga,
Tai Chi, Qigong and Pilates slow down the
process of the body’s natural degeneration
by increasing muscle and tendon circulation,
as well as maintaining elasticity to the spine.
They also remove tension from our mind and
body, strengthen our muscles, reduce excess
weight, and correct our posture.
Yoga can be practised at any age and its
effects go way deeper than purely the
physical. It encourages mobility and freedom
to the joints and moves the spine in all
directions. Pilates Reformer provides a fine
tuned system of training with the chief
focus being on core strength and stability.
Ask any physical therapist about their
recommendations for preventing and avoiding
back pain and they all recommend keeping
mobile and building a stronger core. Look at
the athletes at the Olympics - most of them
practise some level of Yoga and Pilates for
strength and mobility.
