THE KAAS PLATEAU, located 25 km from Satara in Maharashtra, is a beautiful<br />
biodiversity spot whose wide range of wild flowers had started attracting nature<br />
lovers over the last few years. But the trickle had changed into hordes in recent<br />
times. Last year, on some days, there were as many as 12,000 visitors.<br />
Unregulated tourism had seen many pitfalls leading to habitat destruction at the<br />
UNESCO World Heritage site. People were driving their vehicles right into the<br />
middle of the flowering area. Many of them were rampantly plucking flowers to<br />
carry back with them. The Satara Forest Division has now stepped in to protect<br />
the fragile ecosystem of the area. Tourists, each paying Rs 50, will now only be<br />
allowed in batches of 750 tourists in each of four daily slots. Every slot will extend<br />
to three hours. Bookings can be done on the Forest Division’s website. Here is one<br />
move of the bureaucracy which everyone is appreciating.<br />
