I grew up in Southern
California skateboarding,
playing Atari, and
collecting comic books
and Garbage Pail Kids.
I became obsessed
with art history and
with the technical skills
I developed drawing as
a child, I started to stretch. Painting in oils became
my focus along with some experimental
work. I received my BA from San Diego State
University in Painting with a minor in Art History
in 2004. Then in 2006 I moved to the
rural north of Japan. The Japanese language
and arts of ikebana, zen gardens, ukiyo-e,
and anime have heavily influenced my work.
I have since returned to San Diego and been
changed deeply by Japan which has led me
back into drawing as a means of meditation.
My work is now done primarily on a small
scale and monochromatically in red ink. Ink
is an unforgiving medium much like life; there
is no erasing mistakes or over painting – one
must stay in the moment.
