Marie Bergstedt spent her first fifteen
years moving back and forth between
a foster home and her birth mother.
Lacking a rhythmic family structure,
she picked up sewing, crocheting, and
knitting at an early age, literally stitching
her way through hard times. In
the 1970s and 80s Bergstedt studied a
wide range of traditional art techniques, concentrating in hand-colored photography and giving
vision to memories from her childhood. She continued her studies and art practice while
working as a fund development professional, transitioning to fiber art and completing private
commissions for jewelry and clothing design after hours. Returned to full-time art since 2006,
Bergstedt has combined the conceptual roots of her photographic images with the fiber and
design skills first employed to mentally ground her
childhood. Memories and life challenges inspire
the themes of her recent fiber sculptures, which
have been selected for 68 juried exhibitions, seven
books, three interviews and 16 awards. Her work
has been included in twenty press publications
including Germany’s Textile Forum, England’s embroidery
magazine, and Fiber Art Now in the USA.
