„I believe one’s art
should reflect those really
meaningful things
in one’s life, things an
artist loves and knows,
that have made her the artist she is today.” Luz-Maria Lopez’s first exposure to art was the images
of icons on their family altar that she saw every day as a child. Those early experiences,
along with her grandmother’s stories, have been very powerful influences in what she paints.
Her Latin heritage and the Maya influence in her native country, Honduras, are reflected in
her work. Maria’s works are iconic and figurative – a blend of cultural symbols, metaphors,
allegories and legends;
stories of creations which
are filled with symbolism.
Fairy tales, indigenous
folklore and mythological
stories have also
contributed. „Gradually,
I begin to see something
in my mind, which becomes
the starting point
of the work, and I go from
there... to wherever the
painting takes me.”
