Philosophy has been afflicted by the dogmatic fallacy, which is the belief<br />

that the principles <strong>of</strong> its working hypotheses are clear, obvious <strong>and</strong><br />

irreformable. <strong>The</strong>n, as a reaction from this fallacy, it has swayed to the<br />

other extreme which is the fallacy <strong>of</strong> discarding method. Philosophers<br />

boast that they uphold no system. <strong>The</strong>y are then a prey to the delusive<br />

clarities <strong>of</strong> detached expressions which it is the very purpose <strong>of</strong> their<br />

science to surmount. Another type <strong>of</strong> reaction is to assume, <strong>of</strong>ten tacitly,<br />

that if there can be any intellectual analysis it must proceed according to<br />

some one discarded dogmatic methods, <strong>and</strong> thence to deduce that<br />

intellect is intrinsically tied to erroneous fictions. This type is illustrated<br />

by the anti-intellectualism <strong>of</strong> Nietzsche <strong>and</strong> Bergson, <strong>and</strong> tinges<br />

American Pragmatism.<br />

Section IV. A method is a way <strong>of</strong> dealing with data, with evidence. What<br />

are the evidences to which philosophy appeals?<br />

It is customary to contrast the objective approach <strong>of</strong> the ancient Greeks<br />

with the subjective approach <strong>of</strong> the moderns, initiated by Descartes <strong>and</strong><br />

further emphasized by Locke <strong>and</strong> Hume.<br />
