Abstract<br />

ENERGY CONFINEMENT WITH AUXILIARY HEATING IN JT-60.<br />

An improved divertor confinement regime has been found in beam heated lower X-point discharges<br />

in JT-60. The improvement is associated with an increase in electron density <strong>and</strong> high particle<br />

recycling in the divertor region, the latter of which is in contrast to the H-mode. The energy confinement<br />

time becomes longer than that of limiter discharges with the same plasma volume by up to 50%. The<br />

radiation power in the divertor region is increased up to half of the input power. Frequent edge localized<br />

modes observed in low-q discharges degrade the improved energy confinement.<br />
