NOT MANY HAIRDRESSERS can name Christopher<br />

Kane as the first ever show they styled at – but Rebecca<br />

Chang isn’t your average hairdresser. Having made<br />

the leap from Mumbai to London, Rebecca trained at<br />

Toni&Guy, quickly earning herself three promotions in two<br />

years and becoming a finalist at the L’Oréal Colour Trophy.<br />

From there, Rebecca moved to Salako in London’s West<br />

End in 2013, to learn from session legend Jimo Salako.<br />

This introduced her to some of the most renowned stars<br />

of the session world; in particular Guido and Gary Gill,<br />

who have enlisted her expertise as part of their teams.<br />

“Rebecca has a great eye for detail and style,” says Gary.<br />

“Her commitment to her craft and the hairdressing and<br />

fashion industry is fantastic.”<br />

Following her debut at Christopher Kane, Rebecca<br />

has gone on to work at fashion giants such as Valentino,<br />

Dior, Coach and Prada. She was also asked by Gary Gill<br />

to produce the S/S17 Vetements show. “As producer, your<br />

main goal is to ensure that everything runs smoothly –<br />

even though it’s impossible!” Rebecca explains. How<br />

does she deal with these pinch-yourself experiences?<br />

“No matter what, the key is to enjoy myself every<br />

moment,” says Rebecca. “Stay grounded and work hard –<br />

aim to do one thing better than yesterday. Always be kind<br />

no matter what, and embrace failure with a smile.”<br />

This wealth of experience ensured that Rebecca scooped<br />

The It Girl trophy at the 2017 It List Awards. “The day<br />

after the event, I got up and had to double check the<br />

award to see if it was real,” Rebecca laughs. Does she have<br />

any advice for budding It Listers for <strong>2018</strong>? “Highlight<br />

everything you have done and achieved so far, even if it’s<br />

the smallest thing in your career,” she says. “Don’t be shy<br />

about telling your story.”<br />

Since her win, Rebecca has hardly had time to polish<br />

that trophy thanks to her jetset life, styling at some of the<br />

biggest shows in the world. “I headed the Mulberry Trunk<br />

show S/S18 during Paris Fashion Week for the first time<br />

– Gary believed that I could deliver to his standards and<br />

trusted me to lead the hair team,” she says. “It was one of<br />

the highlights of my year!”<br />

In fact, Gary has been so impressed by Rebecca’s<br />

work that he asked her to be part of his core team. “This<br />

means being really involved with the creative process,”<br />

Rebecca continues. “This was one of my goals and I’m<br />

ecstatic about it!”<br />

And she’s in demand: “Soichi Inagaki joined Art Partner<br />

and has asked me to be his first assistant, which is an<br />

honour for me,” Rebecca says. And she has also just taken<br />

on a new role as styling director for Senzi, the international<br />

cutting education brand.<br />

It’s clear that along with a love for hair, Rebecca also<br />

believes in creating a legacy. “Sharing my experiences<br />

and knowledge gives me a sense of pride and also<br />

responsibility. This is my love, this is my objective.”<br />
