Yasothon; a model city of organic farming
WORDS : BOONTHAM LERTSUKEKASEM
There is growing awareness of organic
farming around the world. Recently Bhutan
announced that it may become the world’s
first organic nation, while the state of Sikkim
in India declared themselves the first 100%
organic state. In Thailand, the small province
of Yasothon located in the country’s lower
Northeastern region has long used organic
farming methods. Yasothon city itself was also
selected by the Ministry of Agriculture as a
“Model City”. In early 2016, organic farming in
Thailand was boosted due to the cooperation
of all sectors in the civil government. This
collaboration aimed to drive the province as
a hub for organic farming (Land of Organic)
under the concept “Organic for Better Life
of All”. The area used for organic farming
in Yasotorn increased to 46,625 rai (7460
hectares) from just 19,251 rai (3020 hectares)
in 2009. The farms usually grow rice, red
onions, watermelon, vegetables and peanuts,
with plans to add more herbs and other crops
in the near future. The current crops have
been made into many products such as rice
bran oil, powered rice milk, and sprouted
brown rice. Cosmetics and various snacks are
in development to increase product variety.
Around 90% of organic agriculture from
Yasothon, especially organic rice, is exported to
foreign markets like Europe, The United States,
Canada, Australia, China, and were certified
internationally by organisations such as IFOAM,
USDA, EU, CERES and COR. Meanwhile in the
domestic market, the goal of all sectors is
to encourage the expansion of organic food
consumption within Thailand. This is to give
the Thai people access to healthier, world class
products. As the consumer base increases, organic
farming within the country will grow as well.
