Machine vision event proved to
be successful for all participants
The UKIVA Machine
Vision Conference and
Exhibition held in Milton
Keynes in May proved to be
even more popular than last
year’s inaugural event, with
attendance up 17% on 2017.
This time, 54 technical
seminars and two keynote
presentations were supported
by an exhibition which saw
56 of the world’s leading
suppliers of industrial vision
components systems and
services show their latest
developments. Presenters
and exhibitors were
impressed by the number of
visitors who were seeking
vision solutions for live
applications, making this
a real platform for business.
The two keynote
presentations covered
different applications of
autonomous vehicles.
Professor Tony Pipe, deputy
director at Bristol Robotics
Laboratory, UWE talked about
the Venturer autonomous
car project, while Henry
Harris-Burland discussed
the challenges faced by
his company (Starship
Technologies) in bringing its
advanced personal delivery
robots to market.
The day was designed
to provide something for
everyone, and presentations
ranged from delivering
a basic understanding of
vision technology to the
complexities of subjects such
as deep learning and machine

topics attracted the largest
audiences of the day.
One popular seminar was
presented by Allan Anderson
of ClearView Imaging.
It was entitled: ‘Vision Systems
Don’t Work!’ and came up with
seven pieces of the puzzle as
to why vision systems can fail,
and sometimes spectacularly.
He did point out that after
50 years of evolution, and
millions of systems deployed
across the world, it is true to
say that only a few systems fail.
He talked about the key
areas where failures most
frequently occur and offered
guidance on how these
failures or mistakes can be
avoided. He told delegates
to think about algorithms;
complexity; flexibility;
set up; acceptance; cost and
knowledge. “Vision systems
are devised by vision
engineers and so can be
pretty complex,” he said.
“Make sure you get buy in
from everyone at the company,
including those on the factory
floor, to make things work.”
