Madagascar is still hardly known as
a destination among the surfing
community. Nevertheless the
island is full of extraordinary
places where you can surf.
While the island is widely known for the
natural beauty of its fauna and flora as well as
endless sandy beaches majestically dominated
by coconut trees, few people are aware that the
Malagasy coast offers a great variety of reefs,
open to the powerful sea, thereby creating a
great variety of amazing waves, suitable for
surfers of all experience levels.
There are waves all year
long: rights, lefts, beach
breaks and the waves
at the reef for which one
has to go a little offshore.

Madagascar offers the most incredible sites
for all kinds of surfing activities – especially on
the east coast. So far many great spots remain
an inside tip where,, with a little luck, the sea
is all yours.
Located on the east coast, Mahambo has
all it takes for being a first-class surf spot in
Madagascar. There are waves all year long:
rights, lefts, beach breaks and the waves
at the reef for which one has to go a little
offshore. In Mahambo you can rent boards,
learn to surf from the beach guards or take
professional surf lessons. It should be noted
that in Madagascar, there are few places to buy
boards or repair them, which makes Mahambo
an exception.
At Sambava, the region of vanilla, there is a
spot more suitable for the more experienced.
Here there's a classic wave break at the estuary
of the local river providing barrels and the
chance to catch some long rides.
Anakao is internationally renowned for
spectacular surf spots surrounded by coral reefs.
North of Nosy Ve, left of Flame Ball, Tiforone or
Jelly Babies provide great surfing areas, where
the water temperature combines perfectly with
the quality of the waves. Not far to the right of
the southern tip of Anakao and Antoleft, off
Nosy Satrana, there are some great point breaks,
which are becoming increasingly popular
among South African and Australian surfers.
Ideally located between the ocean and the
Pangalanes Canal, the small town of Ambila
Lemaitso is also a potential surf spot with good
wave opportunities.
