SUMMER SIZZLED WITH EVENTS
Monday mornings saw the introduction of
‘Welcome Space’ when the church is open to
encourage locals and walkers to drop in for a
coffee and a chat.
Monday afternoons have been busy during
the school holidays as the church has also
hosted a ‘Stay and Play’ session, which will
continue for the under 5’s in September with
an added story time for mums to sit with their
children.
We are also planning some quiz mornings,
board game mornings and sing-along
sessions actively fulfilling our mission
statement ‘To be at the heart of the
community’.
On Monday 6th August a cello concert saw
local lad Mark Johnston, winner of the
Andrew Lloyd-Webber prize play to a capacity
audience in church who were all delighted by
the evening.
In June the church held a successful ‘Big
Summer Picnic’. This was a very enjoyable
afternoon outside in the church grounds in
the great spell of dry weather.
Heritage events, fronted and researched by
Susan and Lynn Whitehead saw the church
open on Saturdays 8th and 15th of September
with recordings of interviews, written
documents and reports, photos and artefacts
based on this year’s theme ‘Bury Union
Workhouse’ (now Fairfield Hospital).
On Thursday 13 September a talk was given
by author Peter Higinbottam on ‘The History
of the Workhouse’. This was a very informative
event which included a buffet supper.
