silent soldier silhouettes
have made an appearance
at memorials and planting
schemes are symbolic of
the time. Two major new
installations have also been
designed a WW1 pop-up
garden and permanent war
memorial in Castleton.
Along the way judges met
members of the public,
school children and
business owners who each
demonstrated how they are
working to make Rochdale
borough greener and more
pleasant. Rochdale in Bloom has inspired an everincreasing
number of volunteer organisations to take up
the clean and green challenge. Among the ever-increasing
number of volunteers in Rochdale are primary and secondary
schools, community groups and charities, Friends groups, as
well as individuals who brighten up their streets and businesses.
Volunteers come from every corner of Rochdale with representatives from 4-94 years old.
Roy Down, chairman of Rochdale in Bloom, said: “Our members use their time, expertise
and sheer determination to bring colour and life to the whole of Rochdale. Some have a
passion for food growing, others a flair for creating blooming displays. Together, we have
been working hard once again this year to ensure the area is as attractive as possible for
the community and visitors.”
Paul Ellison, Rochdale in Bloom committee, said: “The RHS judges were overwhelmed by
the fitting tribute to Castleton and loved the WW1 pop up garden, as well as all our other
great features. This year has been bigger and better due to the massive sponsorship
support from Marshalls Plc. Where we have reached new heights, especially showcasing
this year at the RHS Tatton Park flower show.”
“Once again in 2018, the magnificent efforts of our volunteers have been matched by the
input from sponsors, supporters and Rochdale Borough Council. The whole In Bloom
effort is based around a great relationship with Rochdale Council Environmental
Management and the community groups. The efforts are consistently amazing.”
“A big well done to everyone, we are hoping for a terrific result! Our thanks must go to
the Council’s Environmental Management team who have worked with us to make sure
that the municipal areas of the route have been to a very high standard. However, the
stars of the show have definitely been our community groups and volunteers.”
