Stage 3
cancer?
Just a blip
I was diagnosed with
stage 3 breast cancer
in August last year.
I had a 10cm tumor.
I was in the middle of
my second year doing
the challenge. I had
chemotherapy followed
by radiotherapy after
a mastectomy. But I was focused on my 1000 miles, and
determined to walk as much as possible during the whole thing.
Some days were really tough – I got neutropenic sepsis and nearly
didn’t make it. My consultant said I’d have died if I’d not been as fit
I was. That week in hospital on isolation drove me nuts. Nowhere
to walk! I was determined to get back to Cornwall to a special
place called St Nectan’s Glen which I had walked to when I was
diagnosed. I made it back this June and thanked the gods…
I even got my 80-year-old mother to walk there!
Two things that have kept me going are the company of my
greyhound and the support of the Facebook group – it’s been
awesome. On the dark days I thought about reaching the 1000
miles and told myself I could do it, and everyone agreed. And I did!
On the way, I’ve learnt to just take time out to enjoy this beautiful
world and do the things that make me happy. Walking does that.
The important thing is don’t give up… it does get better and you
will come back stronger and more empowered in yourself.
I just wish the NHS recognised the benefits of walking for
cancer patients and promoted
it more. We’re are given drugs
but no consideration for how
a challenge and a group like
#walk1000miles can help for
mental health, fitness and
recovery.
‘It’s AMAZING!’
After having a heart
attack last year and then
a blood cancer diagnosis
I wasn’t sure I’d get to
1000 miles. But I did!
And I’m convinced it’s the
exercise that has meant
I have no more heart
issues and the blood
issues are stable. Add in
a three-stone weight loss,
increased energy levels, a
clear head and everything
in perspective and it’s
AMAZING amazing how
good walking is for you!
Gary Bond,
I have hyperparathyroidism
and hypercalcemia. Some days
it’s impossible to walk. But
when I get out there it’s great;
the fresh air, the scenery, the
wildlife, the people you meet...
