#WALK1000MILES2019
‘I feel alive for the
first time in years!’
say #walk1000miles
is a powerful tool
against depression & anxiety
I suffer from bipolar disorder
and struggle with incredibly
bad lows. In fact, in early 2018,
I became an in-patient at
a mental health unit after
a suicide attempt. But the
challenge has given me
a new focus and the other
people involved are
amazing. After posting that I was struggling
I received so much encouragement from their
replies and even private messages of support
and offers of help. One lady even regularly
messages me if I’m quiet online for a few days
just to check I’m okay. Being in the challenge
Facebook group is like having thousands of
like-minded friends and you’re never alone.
Before, I felt empty. I had nobody to talk to,
was desperately lonely with no way forward.
Now I feel energised and part of something
bigger. I feel alive for the first time in years!
I’m a beach walker and doing a lot of miles
barefoot I’ve noticed a big change for the better
in the shape of my calves and ankles. And let me
tell you, when you’re having a tough day and a
dolphin stops by to cheer you up, it really helps!
‘Life was stuck in a rut’
If I didn’t start this challenge I would never
be as happy as I am now! I realised my life
was stuck in a rut. I divorced my husband,
moved house, met fantastic people, met
my new man walking (who loves
mountains), I have two new puppies and
once my back surgery has been done
I’m planning to walk in Nepal. Thank you
#walk1000miles for making me happy!
Nikki Wilson, 38, Oswestry
‘Best 20 months ever’
I’ve met lots of new
friends through
#walk1000miles, climbed
my first mountain and
got to walk lots of new
places. Most of all I’ve got
a much brighter outlook
on life. I’ve suffered with
depression for 50 years
and the past 20 months
have been the best ever.
Pete Ashmore, 64,
‘Best quality time forever’
Instead of thinking I can’t do something
due to too many hurdles, I’ve learnt to jump
the flipping fences! I did the Pennine Way
as part of my 1000 and it has been the
best quality time I’ve had forever.
Amanda Smith, 50, Lancashire
DO IT FOR HAPPINESS
I now know I can achieve anything
and I have found a new passion
in life! Sarah Small, 33, Blackpool
Just keep on
walking – you don’t
realise how good it
will make you feel!
I’m calmer, fitter
and happier!
Paul Morley,
44, Darlington
Virtually
housebound when I
started, now headup
and happy.
‘Completely AMAZING’
Doing #walk1000miles changed our lifestyle
from sedentary to active, and felt completely
AMAZING. I’ll never forget walking up my first
Wainwright fell in February and realising I can
do what I never thought was possible.
Julie Yates, 54, Cumbria
I’m more patient and tolerant, and I’ve got
peace of mind – and it felt fabulous to hit 1000!
