#WALK1000MILES2019
DO IT FOR ADVENTURE
‘Beautiful,
testing,
cathartic’
87%
of participants said
doing the challenge
has taken them to new places
I decided to walk my 1000
miles in one go – from Land’s
End to John o’Groats ‘on me
tod’ – and it was the most astounding, hardest,
achingly beautiful, testing, cathartic thing I’ve
ever done! I can’t recommend this life experience
enough. Seeing my country in every weather, and
meeting such great people, gave me a new sense
of where I live and how amazing the people that
live on this island are. I’ve learned a lot of about
myself and made some major life adjustments;
walking is the best therapy! I didn’t feel in danger
at any point (well, apart from when I rescued
a sheep from the cliff edge, had to be roped up
a landslide when the ‘Beast
from the East’ hit and had
to climb a giant river bank),
and the constant company
of the #walk1000miles
group meant I was never
lonely. I couldn’t have done
it without that support –
knowing this group is here
is a vital organ to me now!
Kat Savage, Cornwall
‘I don’t recognise myself’
I’ve just completed the Camino de
Santiago, the French Way (780km). Who
am I? I don’t recognise this girl! I wouldn’t
walk a mile up the road without looking
over my shoulder, fearful of walking alone,
before this challenge! Julia Bull, 60
‘I’m a tomboy
once again’
I’ve rediscovered the
inner tomboy in me.
I love scrambling over
rocks, thrashing through
overgrown paths,
jumping over streams.
The challenge is so
motivating and I have
developed a ‘have a go’
attitude to life.
‘Don’t wait!’
I explored areas I never had
the opportunity to see before
and met people from different
backgrounds I would never have
met. I feel fitter, happier
and fabulous! If I could
‘Rejuvenated my
drive to explore’
have told myself one thing 18
months ago, it would be “Don’t
wait, life’s too short! You will
see the wonders of nature and
wake up invigorated! Do it now!”
Angela Harvey, 53, London
I’ve rejuvenated my childlike drive to
explore what’s around the next corner,
fitter than I’ve ever been and I’ve fitted
it all round work, and family. I’ve learnt
to simply live in the moment. My best
memory? Completing 20 miles in
heavy snow on Bodmin Moor with only
my dog Nell for company. Walked miles with ice in my beard and the
biggest smile on my face. I’m sure the few people I met as I got back
towards civilisation must have thought me quite mad!
Graeme Strike, 51, Bodmin
‘A whole new world’
Being with my family in beautiful Cwm Idwal on
my birthday in April was amazing: we would never
have had a holiday in Snowdonia without this
challenge! Say ‘yes’ to every walking opportunity
you are offered: it’s a whole new world.
Angie Francis, 55, Wolverhampton
‘Changed me
completely’
I’ve met some
wonderful new friends,
I’m fitter and more
confident – and
I NEVER thought I’d be
climbing mountains.
This challenge has
changed me
completely.
Lisa Harrison,
44, Leicestershire
I went on a walking
holiday! Something
I never thought
I would do. And it
was AMAZING! All
my spare time is
now taken up with
walking... It’s my
go-to chosen
activity now.
