#WALK1000MILES2019
DO IT FOR WEIGHT-LOSS
From
22st to 13
Munros!
The best thing about
this year was climbing
hills for the first time!
I climbed my first-ever hill in January and
I climbed my 12th and 13th Munro (Scottish
mountains over 3000ft high) this last
month. It’s something I never thought
would be possible a year ago.
When I first did this challenge in 2017
I was over 22st and a size 26. I lost eleven
and a half stone in 15 months and I’m now
a size 10/12. I was also really unfit, getting
out of breath even climbing the stairs.
Now I’ve even taken up running to improve
my stamina for hill-walking. I’m a lot fitter
than I used to be. I walk faster and have
so much more energy.
Getting out in the fresh air, exploring
new places and meeting new people has
done me the world of good. If I am feeling
anxious, just getting out and walking up
my local forestry track helps clear my head.
I think it’s the mixture of the fresh air and
the exercise. Getting to the summit of
a hill is a fantastic feeling, both in terms
of an achievement and the views you
get when you’re up there. Incredible!
For anyone who’s either looking to lose
a bit of weight or just get a little bit fitter
it’s a great challenge. Three miles a day is
an easily achievable
goal, even if you
have an office job
like I do. And you
can choose to do
it based on your
every move, or
planned walks only
if you’re looking for
a bigger challenge.
‘Amazing!‘
Down three stone
and two dress sizes.
And I did my first
ever solo walk!
I was feeling
trapped in the
house, my hubby
didn’t feel like going
out and my dog was
sleepy, so I grabbed
a bottle of water and a snack and drove
to a local lake. I was able to walk at my own
pace and appreciate the peace and quiet.
It was liberating!
‘Feel as young as my
23-year-old daughter!’
I knew as soon as I saw #walk1000miles it was
exactly what I needed to start feeling healthy
again. I used my Christmas money to buy
walking shoes, subscribed to Country Walking,
and now I’ve got line after line of weight loss
in my diary. Feels so good! I’ve lost 3 stone
and more importantly booked to walk The
West Highland Way
with my two daughters
at the end of May 2019.
I climbed Goat Fell, Arran
(my first time) in June.
I would never have been
able to do this six months
previously! I felt as young
as my daughter, who is 23!
AFTER
‘5½ stone in a year’
I started my 1000 miles on 1 January and joined
Slimming World a week later. To my amazement
I smashed my mileage and weight targets –
5½ stone and nearly 2000 miles! I think weight
loss and exercise go together, so walking is the
obvious first choice for exercise. Walking keeps
your mind focused and
is a great escape. It’s
become so important to
me, both mentally and
physically, helping with
confidence, walking
speed and distance.
‘Two stone
and counting’
I feel amazing!!! I wake
up every day with more
of a spring in my step
than the day before! I’ve
been overweight most
of my life, yo-yo dieting
for years. Now I make more of an effort
to walk places instead of getting the bus
or a lift, and here I am, I’ve already walked
my 1000 miles and lost over 2 stone in
weight and counting!
experience of weight loss a happier one
Deborah
Fox, 51,
Sheffield BEFORE AFTER
I started my 1000-mile journey because I was diagnosed
with pre-diabetes and high blood pressure. Being a TVaddict
chunky monkey this challenge was such a gamechanger
– it gave me a purpose to get up and be active and
not wallow in my diagnosis. After 3 months I had reversed
my pre-diabetes back into the normal range and the same
with the high blood pressure. I’ve started to lose weight,
which is amazing, finally divorced my TV and found out I love trig points I’m not stopping this
train any time soon! In fact the change has been the start of a revolution: I’ve made new friends,
been new places, walked up hills I would never have tried before and given me the get-up-andgo
to indulge in more exercise and sport. Wouldn’t have happened before the challenge!
