#WALK1000MILES2019
FOR HAPPINESS
‘Now I have
so much
going for me!’
I was in the military for 25
years until I had a stroke
after a back operation and had to leave.
I drank more, became overweight and depressed
and didn’t care about anything. I remember
standing on a bridge and thinking it would be
easy to just step off. In 2010 I watched a film
called The Way, about the 500-mile Camino
de Santiago in Spain and told myself one day
I’d walk it – but it was just a dream. I came across
#walk1000miles, and seeing people doing it and
enjoying their pictures gave me an incentive
to turn it into a reality. #walk1000miles is an
extended family. You get encouragement,
a picture when stuck in a room with no view, and
there’s not one person who judges or demands.
It just kept me going, and this year I walked the
Camino – it was such an emotional experience!
If it wasn’t for 1000 miles I would be a different
person; with mental
health issues. Now I have
a job in the NHS, I help
and advise veterans
and I work with
psychology services
helping others. I have
so much going for me!
‘Being a mum
was taking its toll’
Before #walk1000miles I was struggling
with sadness and anxiety. My world
changed in so many ways when I had my
daughter 4½ yrs ago and being a stayat-home
mum was taking its toll. Now
my mental health is much improved,
I’m healthier and I’ve lost over a stone.
‘I feel 17 again’
I realised that just because l was ageing
it didn’t mean l was aged and l could do
anything l put my mind to. l lost weight
and toned up, got a suntan and felt better
for being outside. I feel 17 again!
Shelley Dunkerley, 58, Wakefield
Gained so much
confidence in myself so
I explore further on solo
walks and I love it! Love
the positivity that walking
gives me and the freedom.
‘A massive
boost’
After some very dark
times with my mental
health, having that
goal within reach has
kept my head above
water and wanting
to carry on. It’s really
given me a massive
boost to keep going
no matter what life
throws at me.
