#WALK1000MILES2019
DO IT FOR NATURE
69%
of car journeys are
under 5 miles –
the most polluting kind
All the extra
walking means I’m
appreciating nature
and the seasons so
much more.
‘Rekindled my passion’
As a teenager I was into birdwatching, but later it
took a back seat to work, life, marriage and children.
As soon as I started to #walk1000miles I started
taking a lot more photos. I’ve really started to have
an interest in dragonflies, too, and have just joined
the British Dragonfly Society. I’ve had a number
of stressful jobs and walking and wildlife is such
a fantastic counterbalance and chance to clear the
mind. It’s great to get feedback on my pictures in
the Facebook group, and I always caption them,
as a lot of people have commented on the fact
that they are learning more about wildlife through
this group. It’s certainly rekindled my passion!
‘I use the car less
and think more’
It’s made me fitter and healthier,
and I use the car less and think
about the environment more.
Where I walk, along the coastal
path, there’s often rubbish,
particularly plastic, so I’ve started
supporting 4ocean, reuse water
bottles and encouraging
colleagues to do so. Our
countryside is something we need
to look after for future generations!
‘My first barn owl!’
Seeing wildlife I’ve not
seen before has been
the best thing for me
– like my first barn owl
in the wild! Enjoy the
experience, look at the
wonderful things around
you. It’s not a race.
‘Amazing!’
I take diversions now to
include parks since it is
much more enjoyable and
better for the soul. Taking
bird seed to feed the
ducks and watching the
growth of the Canadian
geese goslings is amazing.
