#WALK1000MILES2019
‘It feels great’
6%
of 1000-milers in 2018
did it for charity, raising
an average of £517 each
I’ve been doing my 1000 in
memory of my daughter Carly,
who took her own life in 2006.
It really gives me a focus and
a reason to get out of the door
to walk when it’s -5°C or
pouring with rain! Reading many posts on
#walk1000miles, there are many of us who have,
or have had, mental health issues of our own, and
walking seems to be an effective way of facing
our demons. It feels great to read all the positive
posts, and even better to use walking as a means
of addressing mental health issues.
Stephen William Dean, Surrey
‘Gives me such a buzz’
I raised money for two
charities we know and it
gives me a buzz to help
them. I love to help others
and have more charity
events lined up to look
forward to. This money is important, and
it’s important to me to help as much as I can.
‘The offers flooded in’
I look after identical twin boys aged
12 who suffer with Batten disease.
Their parents work tirelessly to raise
money to fund research in the hope
of finding better treatment for this
illness. The boys need 24hr care and
are now blind, have no speech or
mobility and suffer regular seizures.
Their parents are truly amazing and
it’s inspired me to raise as much
‘So proud, so excited’
‘This year was something very special
because I hit the 1000 on my last day of
walking the South West Coast Path. I felt so
happy, so proud and so excited. It was one
of the best days in my life. I did the walk for
the orphanage I am running. Writing down
the amount that we raised (€5536.70)
on a sheet of paper and carrying that
on the last miles made me very proud.
Daniela Leinweber, 42, Flatz, Austria
money as possible while walking
1000 miles – £630 so far, just from
friends! I put a post on Facebook
about my 1000 mile challenge and
just asked if anyone would like to
sponsor me for 1p per mile – the
offers flooded in. I also sponsored
myself for 10p per mile. I have
some brilliant friends!
Sheila Smith, 60, Netherfield
‘Focus to keep going’
‘Sets a great example’
I decided to put 20p in a jar for every mile
I completed for Alzheimers. Walking is a real
passion and combining that with the ability
to help others also helps you to inspire other
people and helps you reach and sometimes
surpass your goals. Fabulous – a real sense
of personal achievement and it has been
a great focus to keep going!
Pat Brunskill, 67, Liskeard
DO IT FOR CHARITY
I started walking
after my hubby was
diagnosed with
diabetes, despite
being one of those
non-typical skinny
ones! Last year I raised
£1000; this year I will
be fundraising again
with a Snowdon climb.
Walking clears my
head, gives me space
and sets a great
example to my boys
who are now have a
genetic probability of
insulin resistance as
they age.
Kath Wareing,
50, Bracknell
I’ve surprised myself
this year by never
giving up, and
raising a lot of
money for Cancer
Research. On a walk
yesterday I got bad
blisters and could
barely walk, but all
I could think about
was why we were
doing this challenge,
and it spurred me
on. #walk1000miles
has been the most
amazing experience
I’ve ever had.
Karl Slater,
32, Leeds
76%
of fundraisers
said it was
vital motivation to help
them hit 1000 miles
‘Great nights’
I’ve boosted my miles doing the London
MoonWalk twice and the Edinburgh one once.
What great nights they are! Amazing experiences
and I felt so proud of myself. It really showed me
how hard I can push myself when I have to.
