#WALK1000MILES2019
DO IT FOR HEALTH
‘I am so much
FITTER!’
My medication for a blood
condition causes anaemia and
my haemoglobin counts have
gone down a lot recently. But
through walking at least 25
miles every week, my heart and
lungs seem to have learned to
cope amazingly with having
a bit less oxygen around.
Thanks to #walk1000miles
I can honestly say, “Eat my
shorts, Anaemia!” I feel brilliant.
Jennie McGinlay, 57
‘Got my life back’
I had a new hip last year and since doing the challenge I can
walk miles now with no pain! I walked around Brockholes
nature reserve when I hit 1000 miles and went for
a midnight swim in the River Ribble afterwards!
I’ve got my life back. Ann Wheeler, 60
‘Don’t let ill
health be an
excuse’
In January I had stomach
surgery, in February I was
in bed for three months
after foot surgery, and on
my first day back to work
I fell and broke my wrist
and two ribs. I have a bad
back and issues with my
whole nerve system
through my body. But
because I was part of this
challenge it just made me
walk! When I finished
I was a mixture of
surprised, proud and
over the bloody moon!
Suzanne Gibbs,
55, Gosport
Catch me if you can!
A year ago I went for a walk with friends and
I was stopping for a breather up the hills and
bringing up the rear. Now I have to wait at the
top now for everyone to catch up!
Alan Hood, Sheffield
‘More determined…
with cracking pins!’
In January I was at my heaviest weight and
the most unfit I have ever been. Now I am
lighter, leaner, fitter, healthier, I have the
determination to take on new challenges
in different areas in my life and have
a cracking pair of pins!
Maria Hutchings, 51, Southampton
‘Literally kept
me sane’
I was diagnosed with
Polymyalgia rheumatica in
February and this challenge
kept me from going stir
crazy when I could barely
walk. Getting out – even for just a half-mile walk
really was a tonic. Now walking has become
a part of my ‘normal’ day and I jumped for
joy when I completed the 1000 miles!
Ruth Farrell, 50, Marske
My seizures are
down to about 1 to
3 per week. 85% of
them occur indoors
so I spend my time
outdoors and I’m
probably fitter than
I’ve ever been.
Paul Board, Conwy
