又
要 過 年 了 , 公 曆 的 新 年 過 去 之 後 , 中 國 皇 曆 的 新 年 隨
後 登 場 了 。 這 個 至 今 已 有 兩 千 多 年 的 歷 史 節 日 , 隨 著
中 國 人 移 民 至 世 界 各 地 , 影 響 越 來 越 大 。 即 便 身 在 海
外 , 也 可 以 感 受 到 中 國 年 的 味 道 , 像 是 中 國 結 和 燈 籠 等 裝 飾 , 可 愛
的 招 財 貓 和 十 二 生 肖 , 連 許 多 西 方 人 都 知 道 自 己 的 屬 相 是 哪 個 動
物 , 而 今 年 到 了 豬 年 。
有 了 這 樣 濃 厚 的 中 國 新 年 氛 圍 , 想 為 自 己 或 是 朋 友 、 家 人 選 擇
一 件 合 適 的 禮 物 不 再 是 難 事 。 我 們 本 期 為 大 家 提 供 了 一 些 專 為 中 國

中 國 年 的 日 益 流 行 , 除 了 熱 鬧 的 氣 氛 和 令 人 垂 涎 的 美 食 之 外 ,
我 想 歷 史 文 化 的 因 素 也 佔 了 不 小 的 比 重 。 一 件 事 物 被 當 做 珍 寶 一
樣 , 不 僅 陪 伴 了 一 個 人 一 生 , 還 將 一 代 代 傳 承 下 去 , 那 其 中 所 積 澱
的 情 感 和 文 化 , 足 以 打 破 種 族 和 地 區 的 隔 閡 , 征 服 所 有 人 的 心 。 比
如 本 期 旅 遊 欄 目 , 我 們 選 擇 介 紹 一 家 位 於 挪 威 奧 斯 陸 的 酒 店 , 它 曾
是 挪 威 人 乘 坐 輪 船 跨 越 大 西 洋 前 往 美 國 的 起 點 航 站 , 那 一 段 段 百 年

前 曾 經 採 訪 過 的 青 澀 女 孩 已 蛻 變 成 成 熟 優 雅 的 青 年 舞 蹈 家 。 鏡 頭 前
的 她 依 然 是 那 麼 美 麗 純 淨 , 微 笑 著 用 舞 蹈 將 中 國 五 千 年 傳 統 文 化 的
美 好 , 帶 給 世 界 各 地 的 觀 眾 。 在 今 年 的 神 韻 藝 術 團 全 球 巡 演 正 如 火
如 荼 之 際 , 我 們 衷 心 祝 願 演 出 一 切 順 利 , 也 希 望 更 多 人 能 通 過 神 韻
的 演 出 和 中 國 新 年 , 感 受 到 中 國 文 化 的 博 大 深 邃 。

When I was 8 years old, I decided I wanted to be an
archaeologist. I pictured myself holding an artifact,
perhaps a piece of pottery, with my hand touching
the exact spot a person had touched 2,000 years before me. It
made me feel like I could touch him or her through the millennia,
and that amazed me.
I didn’t become an archaeologist, but in a way, I never strayed
far from that dream. In university, I studied history and literature,
and when I read Homer or the Sophoclean tragedies, I felt that
same wonder — I was reading thoughts that someone had
thousands of years ago. I imagined myself as Homer, sitting there
in ancient Greece with thoughts of Odysseus and Penelope just
forming in my mind — thoughts that, unbeknownst to me, would
endure and reach millions of people through the ages to come.
Classical Chinese dancer Miranda Zhou-Galati also reaches
back through the centuries and touches people of the past. As
she plays the roles of figures in Chinese history, she has to feel
what they felt, think what they thought.
The Chinese culture was believed to be divinely inspired;
spiritual self-discipline and reverence for the divine were part
of its essence. One of the strongest feelings that emerges for
Zhou-Galati when she plays China’s ancient figures is a feeling
of connection to the divine.
Taste of Life hopes to revive the heart and spirit of the people
who have established traditions and culture throughout history.
I’m not uncovering ancient artifacts, but I am entering the lives
of ancient peoples through their arts.
With Chinese New Year in February, it’s an especially good time
to learn more about traditional Chinese culture — we’ve explored
this theme through the eyes of a Western chef travelling China,
through the Chinese motifs of our home décor pages, and in
other ways.
Since it’s the Year of the Pig, which represents fortune, we’ve
also taken some time to consider what “fortune” means. Linda
Lorenzi, who designs Italian hand-crafted luxury products,
tells us her fortune is to do work she loves. This is also part of
my fortune. And like Zhou-Galati, I find my greatest fortune is
the connection I feel to the divine. It helps me improve myself,
strengthen my relationships, experience a profound peace, and
I feel it is simply the source of all life’s goodness.
