It had to be you…
Five of Australia’s most successful women open their wedding
albums and share their best tips for keeping the romance alive
Gail Elliott and Joe Coffey
Married: September 18, 1997, at Amagansett Presbyterian Church,
and reception at Goose Creek, The Hamptons, New York, US
THE FESTIVITIES
“I lived in New York for 24 years before
coming to live in Australia and Joe lived
there for many years, too, so we married
in The Hamptons, where the two of us
built a home. As Joe’s from Sydney and
I’m originally from London, friends and
family travelled from all over for the
occasion, so we had a five-day wedding!
New York usually experiences an
‘Indian summer’ in September and that
year was no different – the weather was
incredible. We rented this place called
Goose Creek in East Hampton, which
was a gorgeous property on five-and-ahalf
acres of grounds. It was so much fun.
For our rehearsal dinner, we had a clam
bake on the beach – lobsters, mussels,
clams, corn and potatoes, followed by
toasted marshmallows on the fire.
I was a very calm and organised bride.
It wasn’t until I walked into the church
and saw my husband-to-be standing at
the end of the aisle smiling at me, that
I realised how much preparation it had
taken. I was so relieved to see everyone
there that I started to cry with joy.”
SPECIAL MOMENTS
“My best girlfriends (who happen to be
supermodels!) and my sister were my
bridesmaids – Cindy Crawford, Helena
Christensen, Yasmin Le Bon and Dawn
Elliott. We had such a good time sipping
champagne while doing our makeup and
getting our hair blowdried.”
IF I COULD DO IT ALL AGAIN…
“I’d love to do it all again! The memories
are so vivid; it seems like only yesterday.”
IF I’VE LEARNT ONE THING ABOUT
MARRIAGE, IT’S…
“That it’s a beautiful way of living life and
is about loyalty, caring, love and respect.
My husband and I have fun, whether we’re
going out to an event or staying at home
watching movies with our dogs.”
