PHOTOGRAPHY BY NICK SCOTT/BAUERSYNDICATION.COM.AU
we had four children at a ceremony
release balloons to commemorate the
lives of the bride and groom’s parents
– it was a nice way to remember them,
without focusing on the sadness that
they’re gone.”
Keep in mind that kids get bored –
easily. If you’re planning on inviting kids
to a church ceremony, consider that they
might get frustrated by sitting for long
periods of time. Call their parents before
the day and kindly let them know that if
their kids start crying or acting up; it’s
fine for them to take a breather from the
proceedings. It’s just a much nicer way of
saying, “Please vacate so that I can hear
myself think while I get married to the
man of my dreams.”
At the reception
You don’t have to go to a great deal of
effort to make kids feel included and
special at your wedding, but it’s nice to
bear in mind that weddings are a chance
for adults to unwind and relax… so don’t
expect kids to be on their absolute best
behaviour, either! Let them have fun.
Have a dedicated kids’ table covered with
butcher’s paper and crayons, and let them
go mad. Make kids’ packs filled with little
treats: colouring books and pencils, Play-
Doh, stickers, blowing bubbles and yummy
things to nibble on (just check that nobody
has allergies!).
If you have the room for it, consider
having a dedicated kids’ space – any
events planner worth their salt will be
able to throw together a few chairs, tables
and toys for kids to muck around with.
And if your budget stretches far enough,
a nanny (or two) is an excellent investment
– the adults will be able to party on while
the kids are under watchful eyes.
If you’re inviting super-little ones, it’s
nice to make sure there’s a parents’ room
where babies can be fed in peace, or where
mums and dads can get a little time out.
Most venues will have an anteroom that
you can use.
When it comes to food, it’s best to
serve kids their own menu. Again, keep
it simple – most kids are happy with
sandwiches, fruit and crackers. Check for
allergies and dietary requirements, and
consider throwing in some treats, too,
like biscuits or lollies (yummy food will
go a long way). You’ll officially be The
World’s Coolest Auntie, trust us.
SOME OTHER COOL IDEAS
THAT KIDS WILL LOVE:
• Make like model Poppy Delevingne
and invite kids to wear dress-up
clothes – spotted on her mini guest
was an animal onesie. Adorable.
• Give each kid a disposable camera
and ask them to be your junior
photographers. The results might
surprise you (or not – in any case,
they’ll be occupied…).
• Wedding piñatas are a thing now
– and unsurprisingly, kids love them.
Have a look on Etsy (etsy.com) for
one that suits your theme.
