Sophie Falkiner
and Tony Thomas
Married: November 17, 2001, at All Saints’ Anglican Church in
Woollahra, NSW, and reception at Catalina, Rose Bay, NSW
THE BIG DAY
“It was amazing, from start to finish.
I woke up in a beautiful hotel room that
overlooked Sydney Harbour, went for
a run to get rid of any nerves, then had a
leisurely breakfast with Mum, savouring
the special time that was just for the two of
us. Soon after, my favourite makeup artist
and hairdresser arrived, along with my
five bridesmaids – my sisters and three of
my closest friends. The next few hours
were spent chatting, laughing, getting
ready and popping open the champagne.
Tony sent me a gorgeous heartfelt
card, and friends from around the world
who couldn’t make it called to send their
wishes. That was so special.
At the church, I remember seeing
Tony for the first time and thinking how
gorgeous he looked, but also how nervous
he was! By contrast, I remember being
super relaxed. Other than saying our
vows, the highlight for me was the
stunning gospel choir singing Amazing
Grace and Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.
As soon as we were introduced at the
reception, our friend Angus McDonald
(who plays in Sneaky Sound System)
cranked up Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.
Everyone started dancing and sang out
the chorus: ‘I love you baby!’. It was such
a great way to kick off the reception!
At the end of the night, Tony and I
were carried out on everyone’s shoulders
to Bobby Darin’s More. We were whisked
off to a gorgeous hotel room where we
had vintage champagne waiting for us.
I felt very blessed to not only have a
wonderful new husband, but to have such
amazing friends and family as well.”
SPECIAL MOMENTS
“Tony and I still say (and we’re not biased
at all!) that it was one of the most fun
weddings we’ve ever been to. Everything
from the speeches (Tony’s brother spoke
for 30 minutes but totally brought the
house down) to the dancing (even my
grandma hit the d-floor) was amazing.
Thirteen years later, our friends are
still talking about it.”
IF THERE’S ONE THING I’VE LEARNT
ABOUT MARRIAGE, IT’S…
“That it evolves, deepens and changes.
Sometimes you’ll feel your partner is truly
annoying (I’m being honest!) and other
times you can’t imagine loving them more.
When you feel a slight distance coming
between you, work on it immediately –
don’t let things fester into bigger issues.
Also, enjoy your kid-free time together
and travel whenever possible. Children
are your biggest joy, but they change the
spontaneity in your marriage. Date nights,
compromise, open communication, putting
yourself out (even when you don’t feel like
it), mutual respect and a sense of humour
will all make your marriage work.” #
