Kerri-Anne and
John married at
the Opera House.
Kerri-Anne &
John Kennerley
Married August 18, 1984, in Sydney, Australia
John and I met in New York back in
1978. I thought he was fantastic; it was so
refreshing to meet an English gentleman
after all of the brash New Yorkers. We
became very good friends. In fact, I liked
him so much, I introduced to him to some
of my girlfriends!
We got engaged on February 29 –
it was a leap year. I’d made a booking
at one of our favourite restaurants. John
said to me, “You know, it’s a leap year.
You could, in fact, propose to me.” And
I believe my words in response to him
were, “Pigs will fly.” He had the ring right
there, of course. Our friend Nic Cerrone
had made it – it was beautiful!
We were married at the Sydney Opera
House – I think it might have been the
first wedding they did there. It was a
fabulous day. Reverend Ted Noffs married
us. He was the most wonderful gentleman.
My dress was designed by the designer
of the 1980s, Ewaldo “Wally” Bock.
I was very much the princess, you know
– beads and pearls and all that sort of
stuff. The dress was made in India by
a group of about 10 men, who did all the
beading by hand. It had to be sent back in
panels, and Wally fitted it when it arrived.
I made a speech at the reception, and
John was so surprised! “Get used to it,”
"My best marriage advice? Marry someone you genuinely like.
It 's much easier to last the distance when you're friends."
I said. I think he has. We’ve been married
for 30 years and in that time I’ve learnt
you have to embrace change. Change is
inevitable, but it’s how you deal with it
in your relationship that matters. Accept
that your partner will grow, and grow
with them.” #
