I have been drawing and illustrating
my whole life. My dad is an artist and I
guess I was lucky enough to receive some
of his talent. I began having my work
published way back in 2001 when I was
working on a teen magazine, and it just
continued from there. I’ve had my work
published in so many different magazines
over the years, and now I have my own
business, where I illustrate and design
beautiful invitations.
I don’t really have a set “aesthetic”
– for me it’s important to translate
what my client has in mind into
something beautiful on paper. That
said, watercolour illustrations and bright
florals have become a bit of a signature
of mine. And I do tend to lean towards a
minimalistic style – it lets each element
speak for itself.
Inkling Design began in 2011 when I
left Sydney and moved back home to
Newcastle. When we moved, I wanted
work that was flexible and something I
could do from home. This was the perfect
solution – to create a business that does
design, illustration and invitations. All
my favourite things!
I’m a perfectionist – and it’s hard to
switch off when it’s your own business.
But I have to. It’s about taking one job
at a time because I love getting wholly
invested in all things related to a client’s
design. From finding the perfect shade
of watercolour navy, to meeting their
deadline, I like getting things done right.
So I have to make time for myself!
My favourite part about working on
wedding stationery is the prettiness.
Whether it’s illustrating the couple, the
location, the flowers; it’s always going to
be pretty and joyful, and a representation
of a most happy day. I just love seeing the
delight my clients have when they receive
something so personal to them.
My own wedding day was the happiest
and most joy-filled day. It was one big,
happy, crazy, love-filled party!
