Lisa Wilkinson
and Peter FitzSimons
Married: September 26, 1992, at St John’s Uniting Church, Wahroonga,
NSW, and reception at The Bathers’ Pavilion, Balmoral, NSW
I approached the day in a really relaxed
way. I thought, ‘Anything that goes
wrong is out of my control now. I’m
just going to enjoy the day.’ And I did.”
THE BIG DAY
“It happened to be on the same afternoon
as the rugby league grand final, and the
traffic between the Park Hyatt Sydney,
where my girlfriends and I were getting
ready, and the church in Wahroonga was
hideous. We chose the church as Pete’s
parents, grandparents and some of his
siblings had been married there. Anyway,
I was 45 minutes late. Now, even after
22 years, Pete still brings it up!”
THE LEAD-UP
“A week after Pete and I met, we were
talking about spending the rest of our
lives together. Pete said, ‘You know that
FitzSimons never divorce.’ He said it with
a really straight face, then followed it up
with, ‘I’m not kidding. FitzSimons don’t
divorce. I just thought I’d put that out
there.’ We take our vows very seriously!
I was about as far from a bridezilla as
you could get. Pete and I paid for the
wedding ourselves, so we didn’t have to
keep anybody happy but ourselves. We
kept it all simple – I’m not one to fuss
about things like serviette colours!
I like things done a certain way, so
I organised all of the wedding myself.
At the same time, I was also putting
together the 20th-anniversary issue of
Cleo, so I was literally working around
the clock. But it meant I didn’t have too
much time to worry about the wedding.
SPECIAL MOMENTS
“The moment we were announced
husband and wife and walked down the
aisle hand in hand was the highlight, no
question. I’ll never forget it. The speeches
were amazing, too, and the fact that we
only had 100 guests was lovely, because it
meant that every person there was truly a
part of our lives and was special to us.”
IF I COULD LIVE IT ALL OVER AGAIN…
“I would re-think the bouquets – I went a
little overboard with the number of roses.
I swear it was four times the size of my
head! I really felt sorry for Liz Hayes, my
chief bridesmaid, because I had to hand
my bouquet to her during the ceremony
– so she had to hold not only mine, but
hers, too (which was a slightly smaller
version of mine!). By the time we’d said
our vows, she was sweating. Sorry, Liz!”
IF I’VE LEARNT ONE THING ABOUT
MARRIAGE, IT’S…
“That forgiveness is important. Also,
don’t try to change the person you’ve
married. You married that person, and
you have to try to find a way around the
things that maybe are not absolutely
ideal. Try not to lose each other when
you have kids, too, although that’s difficult
because children are all-consuming!
Date nights are part of who we are as
a couple. We try to reconnect as often as
possible, because we’ve had fairly highpressure
careers and recognise there are
times when we’re not connecting as well
as we’d like to. Having time away as a
couple has been really important in
keeping that connection strong, and also
in keeping the romance alive.” >
