the object be<strong>in</strong>g to assimilate the Eucharistic<br />
service to the ritual of the Church of Rome. It<br />
conta<strong>in</strong>ed the follow<strong>in</strong>g passage: -- "Thy same Son,<br />
the same Sacrifice, which is a pure unspotted <strong>and</strong><br />
holy Sacrifice, exhibited for our reconciliation, for<br />
our shield, shelter, <strong>and</strong> protection aga<strong>in</strong>st thy wrath<br />
<strong>and</strong> aga<strong>in</strong>st the terrors of s<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> death, we do with<br />
faith receive, <strong>and</strong> with our humble prayers offer<br />
before thy glorious majesty." The doctr<strong>in</strong>e of this<br />
passage is unmistakably that of transubstantiation,<br />
but, over <strong>and</strong> above this, the whole of the new<br />
Missal was pervaded by a Romaniz<strong>in</strong>g spirit. The<br />
bishops <strong>and</strong> many of the clergy were ga<strong>in</strong>ed over to<br />
the k<strong>in</strong>g's measures, but a m<strong>in</strong>ority of the pastors<br />
rema<strong>in</strong>ed faithful, <strong>and</strong> the resolute opposition<br />
which they offered to the <strong>in</strong>troduction of the new<br />
liturgy, saved the Swedish Church from a complete<br />
relapse <strong>in</strong>to Romanism. Bishop Anjou, the modern<br />
historian of the Swedish Reformation, says -- "The<br />
severity with which K<strong>in</strong>g John endeavored to<br />
compel the <strong>in</strong>troduction of his prayer-book, was<br />
the test<strong>in</strong>g fire which purified the Swedish Church<br />
to a clear conviction of the Protestant pr<strong>in</strong>ciples<br />
