The declaration was framed on the model of<br />
those exhortations which the prophets <strong>and</strong> high<br />
priests delivered to the K<strong>in</strong>gs of Judah when they<br />
were ano<strong>in</strong>ted. It set forth the <strong>in</strong>stitution of<br />
magistracy by God; its ends, to be "a terror to evildoers,"<br />
etc.; the spirit <strong>in</strong> which it was to be<br />
exercised, "<strong>in</strong> the fear of the Most High;" the faults<br />
the monarch was to eschew -- riches, luxury,<br />
oppression; <strong>and</strong> the virtues he was to practice -- he<br />
was to cultivate piety by the study of Holy<br />
Scripture, to adm<strong>in</strong>ister justice, defend his country,<br />
<strong>and</strong> nourish the true religion. The declaration<br />
concludes by express<strong>in</strong>g the gratitude of the nation<br />
to the "Omnipotent <strong>and</strong> most benignant Father,<br />
who, after so great a persecution <strong>and</strong> so many<br />
calamities <strong>in</strong>flicted upon their beloved country, by<br />
a k<strong>in</strong>g of foreign orig<strong>in</strong>, had given them this day a<br />
k<strong>in</strong>g of the Swedish stock, whose powerful arm, by<br />
the bless<strong>in</strong>g of God, had liberated their nation from<br />
