In ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the affirmative Gallus adduced<br />
the eighteenth chapter of St. Matthew's Gospel,<br />
where it is written, "But if he will not hear thee, tell<br />
it to the pr<strong>in</strong>ces of the Church;" "from which we<br />
<strong>in</strong>fer," he said, "that to the Pope <strong>and</strong> prelates of the<br />
Church has been given power to adjudicate <strong>in</strong><br />
causes ecclesiastical, to enact necessary canons,<br />
<strong>and</strong> to punish the disobedient, even as St. Paul<br />
excommunicated the <strong>in</strong>cestuous member <strong>in</strong> the<br />
Cor<strong>in</strong>thian Church."<br />
Olaf <strong>in</strong> reply said,<br />
"that we do <strong>in</strong>deed read that Christ has given<br />
authority to the apostles <strong>and</strong> m<strong>in</strong>isters, but not to<br />
govern the k<strong>in</strong>gdoms of the world, but to convert<br />
s<strong>in</strong>ners <strong>and</strong> to announce pardon to the penitent."<br />
In proof he quoted Christ's words, "My<br />
k<strong>in</strong>gdom is not of this world."<br />
"Even Christ," he said, "was subject to the<br />
magistrate, <strong>and</strong> gave tribute; from which it might<br />
be surely <strong>in</strong>ferred that he wished his m<strong>in</strong>isters also<br />
