conformity to the rule of the Word of God. To this<br />

Diet came the lead<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>isters as well as the<br />

nobles. The chancellor Lawrence Andersen, as the<br />

k<strong>in</strong>g's representative, presided, <strong>and</strong> with him was<br />

jo<strong>in</strong>ed Olaf Patersen, the Pastor of Stockholm. The<br />

Diet agreed on certa<strong>in</strong> ecclesiastical constitutions<br />

<strong>and</strong> rules, which they subscribed, <strong>and</strong> published <strong>in</strong><br />

the tongue of <strong>Sweden</strong>. The bishops <strong>and</strong> pastors<br />

avowed it to be the great end of their office to<br />

preach the pure Word of God; they resolved<br />

accord<strong>in</strong>gly to <strong>in</strong>stitute the preach<strong>in</strong>g of the Gospel<br />

<strong>in</strong> all the churches of the k<strong>in</strong>gdom, alike <strong>in</strong> country<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> city. The bishops were to exercise a vigilant<br />

<strong>in</strong>spection over all the clergy, they were to see that<br />

the Scriptures were read daily <strong>and</strong> purely<br />

expounded <strong>in</strong> the cathedrals; that <strong>in</strong> all schools<br />

there were pure editions of the Bible; that proper<br />

care was taken to tra<strong>in</strong> efficient preachers of the<br />

Word of God, <strong>and</strong> that learned men were provided<br />

for the cities. Rules were also framed touch<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

celebration of marriage, the visitation of the sick<br />

<strong>and</strong> the burial of the dead.<br />
