bishop of <strong>the</strong> diocese next took <strong>the</strong> matter <strong>in</strong>to his<br />

own hands, and removed Paschale to <strong>the</strong> prison of<br />

Cosenza, where he rema<strong>in</strong>ed shut up dur<strong>in</strong>g eight<br />

months.<br />

The Pope heard of <strong>the</strong> case, and delegated<br />

Card<strong>in</strong>al Alexandr<strong>in</strong>i, Inquisitor-General, to<br />

ext<strong>in</strong>guish <strong>the</strong> heresy <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> K<strong>in</strong>gdom of Naples.[8]<br />

Alexandr<strong>in</strong>i ordered Paschale to be removed from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Castle of Cosenza, and conducted to Naples.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> journey he was subjected to terrible<br />

suffer<strong>in</strong>gs. Cha<strong>in</strong>ed to a gang of prisoners <strong>the</strong><br />

handcuffs so tight that <strong>the</strong>y entered <strong>the</strong> flesh–he<br />

spent n<strong>in</strong>e days on <strong>the</strong> road, sleep<strong>in</strong>g at night on<br />

<strong>the</strong> bare earth, which was exchanged on his arrival<br />

at Naples for a deep, damp dungeon,[9] <strong>the</strong> stench<br />

of which almost suffocated him.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> 16th of May, 1560, Paschale was taken<br />

<strong>in</strong> cha<strong>in</strong>s to Rome, and imprisoned <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Torre di<br />

Nona, where he was thrust <strong>in</strong>to a cell not less<br />

noisome than that which he had occupied at<br />

Naples.<br />
