Vaudois had <strong>in</strong>habited <strong>the</strong> <strong>Valleys</strong> from <strong>the</strong> earliest<br />

times; that <strong>the</strong>y had led forth <strong>the</strong>ir herds upon <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

mounta<strong>in</strong>s before <strong>the</strong> House of Savoy had ascended<br />

<strong>the</strong> throne of Piedmont; that treaties and oaths,<br />

renewed from reign to reign, had solemnly secured<br />

<strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> freedom of <strong>the</strong>ir worship and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

liberties; and that <strong>the</strong> honor of pr<strong>in</strong>ces and <strong>the</strong><br />

stability of States lay <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> faithful observance of<br />

such covenants; and <strong>the</strong>y prayed him to consider<br />

what reproach <strong>the</strong> throne and k<strong>in</strong>gdom of Piedmont<br />

would <strong>in</strong>cur if he should become <strong>the</strong> executioner of<br />

those of whom he was <strong>the</strong> natural protector.<br />

The Protestant cantons of Switzerland jo<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir mediation to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tercessions of <strong>the</strong><br />

Waldenses. And when <strong>the</strong> ahnost <strong>in</strong>credible edict<br />

came to be known <strong>in</strong> Germany and Holland, <strong>the</strong>se<br />

countries threw <strong>the</strong>ir shield over <strong>the</strong> <strong>Valleys</strong>, by<br />

<strong>in</strong>terced<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> duke that he would not <strong>in</strong>flict<br />

so great a wrong as to cast out from a land which<br />

was <strong>the</strong>irs by irrevocable charters, a people whose<br />

only crime was that <strong>the</strong>y worshipped as <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>rs had worshipped, before <strong>the</strong>y passed under<br />

<strong>the</strong> scepter of <strong>the</strong> duke.<br />
