<strong>the</strong>ir pursuers <strong>the</strong> only dangers <strong>the</strong>y had to fear;<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were exposed to death from <strong>the</strong> bl<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g drifts<br />

and tempests of <strong>the</strong> hills. Never<strong>the</strong>less, <strong>the</strong>y arrived<br />

<strong>in</strong> safety <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Valleys</strong>, and added by <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

presence and <strong>the</strong>ir counsels to <strong>the</strong> dignity of this<br />

<strong>the</strong> first great ecclesiastical assembly of modern<br />

times. Of this we have a somewhat remarkable<br />

proof. Three years <strong>the</strong>reafter, a Vaudois, Jean<br />

Peyrel, of Angrogna, be<strong>in</strong>g cast <strong>in</strong>to prison,<br />

deposed on his trial that "he had kept guard for <strong>the</strong><br />

m<strong>in</strong>isters who taught <strong>the</strong> good law, who were<br />

assembled <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> town of Chamforans, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> center<br />

of Angrogna; and that amongst o<strong>the</strong>rs present <strong>the</strong>re<br />

was one called Farel, who had a red beard, and a<br />

beautiful white horse; and two o<strong>the</strong>rs accompanied<br />

him, one of whom had a horse, almost black, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r was very tall, and ra<strong>the</strong>r lame."<br />
