first of <strong>the</strong>se post-Reformation churches set up;<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs speedily followed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r valleys;<br />

pastors were multiplied; crowds flocked to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

preach<strong>in</strong>g, and not a few came from <strong>the</strong> pla<strong>in</strong>s of<br />

Piedmont, and from remote parts of <strong>the</strong>ir valleys,<br />

to dr<strong>in</strong>k of <strong>the</strong>se liv<strong>in</strong>g waters aga<strong>in</strong> flow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />

Church–which <strong>the</strong>ir fa<strong>the</strong>rs had preserved with<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir blood–which <strong>the</strong>ir barbes had laboriously<br />

transcribed and circulated–<strong>the</strong>y now put <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong><br />

hands of <strong>the</strong> Reformers, constitut<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m along<br />

with <strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>the</strong> custodians of this <strong>the</strong> ark of<br />

<strong>the</strong> world's hopes. Robert Olivetan, a near relative<br />
