soldiers were dispatched by <strong>the</strong> Marquis di Pianeza<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Valley of Rora, to massacre its unoffend<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and unsuspect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>habitants. Ascend<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong><br />

Valley of <strong>the</strong> Pelice, <strong>the</strong>y had ga<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> summit of<br />

<strong>the</strong> pass, and were already descend<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> town<br />

of Rora, stealthily and swiftly, as a herd of wolves<br />

might descend upon a sheep-fold, or as, says Leger,<br />

"a brood of vultures might descend upon a flock of<br />

harmless doves." Happily Gianavello, who had<br />

known for weeks before that a storm was<br />

ga<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g, though he knew not when or where it<br />

would burst, was on <strong>the</strong> outlook. He saw <strong>the</strong> troop,<br />

and guessed <strong>the</strong>ir errand.<br />

There was not a moment to be lost; a little<br />

longer, and not a man would be left alive <strong>in</strong> Rora to<br />

carry tid<strong>in</strong>gs of its fate to <strong>the</strong> next commune. But<br />

was Gianavello s<strong>in</strong>gle-handed to attack an army of<br />

500 men? He stole uphill, under cover of <strong>the</strong> rocks<br />

and trees, and on his way he prevailed on six<br />

peasants, brave men like himself, to jo<strong>in</strong> him <strong>in</strong><br />

repell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>vaders. The heroic little band<br />
