presence, gave him such an account of <strong>the</strong>ir faith,<br />

that he candidly confessed that he had been misled<br />

<strong>in</strong> what he had done aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong>m, and would not<br />

aga<strong>in</strong> suffer such wrongs to he <strong>in</strong>flicted upon <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

He several times said that he "had not so virtuous,<br />

so faithful, and so obedient subjects as <strong>the</strong><br />

Vaudois."[6]<br />

He caused <strong>the</strong> deputies a little surprise by<br />

express<strong>in</strong>g a wish to see some of <strong>the</strong> Vaudois<br />

children. Twelve <strong>in</strong>fants, with <strong>the</strong>ir mo<strong>the</strong>rs, were<br />

straightway sent for from <strong>the</strong> Valley of Angrogna,<br />

and presented before <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ce. He exam<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong>m<br />

narrowly. He found <strong>the</strong>m well formed, and testified<br />

his admiration of <strong>the</strong>ir healthy faces, clear eyes,<br />

and lively prattle. He had been told, he said, that<br />

"<strong>the</strong> Vaudois children were monsters, with only<br />

one eye placed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> middle of <strong>the</strong> forehead, four<br />

rows of black teeth, and o<strong>the</strong>r similar<br />

deformities."[7] He expressed himself as not a little<br />

angry at hav<strong>in</strong>g been made to believe such fables.<br />

The pr<strong>in</strong>ce, Charles II,[8] a youth of only<br />
