wood. Conceal<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir chagr<strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>quisitors<br />

took <strong>the</strong>ir departure from San Sexto, and set out for<br />

La Guardia, <strong>the</strong> gates of which <strong>the</strong>y locked beh<strong>in</strong>d<br />

<strong>the</strong>m when <strong>the</strong>y had entered, to prevent a second<br />

flight. Assembl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>habitants, <strong>the</strong>y told <strong>the</strong>m<br />

that <strong>the</strong>ir co-religionists of San Sexto had<br />

renounced <strong>the</strong>ir errors, and dutifully attended mass,<br />

and <strong>the</strong>y exhorted <strong>the</strong>m to follow <strong>the</strong>ir good<br />

example, and return to <strong>the</strong> fold of <strong>the</strong> Roman<br />

shepherd; warn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m, at <strong>the</strong> same time, that<br />

should <strong>the</strong>y refuse <strong>the</strong>y would expose <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />

as heretics to <strong>the</strong> loss of goods and life. The poor<br />

people taken unawares, and believ<strong>in</strong>g what was<br />

told <strong>the</strong>m, consented to hear mass; but no sooner<br />

was <strong>the</strong> ceremony ended, and <strong>the</strong> gates of <strong>the</strong> town<br />

opened, than <strong>the</strong>y learned <strong>the</strong> deceit which had<br />

been practiced upon <strong>the</strong>m. Indignant, and at <strong>the</strong><br />

same time ashamed of <strong>the</strong>ir own weakness, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

resolved to leave <strong>the</strong> place <strong>in</strong> a body, and jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

brethren <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> woods, but were withheld from <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

purpose by <strong>the</strong> persuasion and promises of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

feudal superior, Sp<strong>in</strong>ello.<br />
