v<strong>in</strong>es and ancestral chestnut-trees. But, alas! how<br />

often did <strong>the</strong> tear of sorrow moisten <strong>the</strong> eye as it<br />

marked <strong>the</strong> desolation and ru<strong>in</strong> that deformed those<br />

scenes lately so fair and smil<strong>in</strong>g! The fruit-bear<strong>in</strong>g<br />

trees cut down; v<strong>in</strong>eyard and corn-field marred;<br />

hamlets burned; villages, <strong>in</strong> some cases, a heap of<br />

ru<strong>in</strong>s, all testified to <strong>the</strong> rage of <strong>the</strong> enemy who had<br />

<strong>in</strong>vaded <strong>the</strong>ir land. Years must pass before <strong>the</strong>se<br />

deep scars could be effaced, and <strong>the</strong> beauty of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

<strong>Valleys</strong> restored. And <strong>the</strong>re were yet tenderer<br />

griefs weigh<strong>in</strong>g upon <strong>the</strong>m. How many were <strong>the</strong>re<br />

who had lived under <strong>the</strong> same roof-tree with <strong>the</strong>m,<br />

and jo<strong>in</strong>ed night and morn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same psalm,<br />

who would return no more!<br />

Distress, border<strong>in</strong>g on fam<strong>in</strong>e, began to <strong>in</strong>vade<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Valleys</strong>. Seven months of <strong>in</strong>cessant fight<strong>in</strong>g<br />

had left <strong>the</strong>m no time to cultivate <strong>the</strong> fields; and<br />

now <strong>the</strong> stock of last year's provisions was<br />

exhausted, and starvation stared <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> face.<br />

Before <strong>the</strong> treaty of peace had been signed, <strong>the</strong><br />

time of sow<strong>in</strong>g was past, and when <strong>the</strong> autumn<br />

came <strong>the</strong>re was scarcely anyth<strong>in</strong>g to reap. Their<br />
