till <strong>the</strong>y had re-established <strong>the</strong>mselves and <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

brethren <strong>in</strong> those galleys, which <strong>the</strong>y believed had<br />

as really been given to <strong>the</strong>m by <strong>the</strong> God of heaven,<br />

as Palest<strong>in</strong>s had been to <strong>the</strong> Jews.<br />

Their next march was to Villaro, which is<br />

situated half-way between Bobbio at <strong>the</strong> head and<br />

La Torre at <strong>the</strong> entrance of <strong>the</strong> valley. This town<br />

<strong>the</strong>y stormed and took, driv<strong>in</strong>g away <strong>the</strong> new<br />

<strong>in</strong>habitants. But here <strong>the</strong>ir career of conquest was<br />

suddenly checked. The next day a strong<br />

re<strong>in</strong>forcement of regular troops com<strong>in</strong>g up, <strong>the</strong><br />

Vaudois were under <strong>the</strong> necessity of abandon<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Villaro, and fall<strong>in</strong>g back on Bobbio.[1] This patriot<br />

army now became parted <strong>in</strong>to two bands, and for<br />

many weeks had to wage a sort of guerilla war on<br />

<strong>the</strong> mounta<strong>in</strong>s. France on <strong>the</strong> one side, and<br />

Piedmont on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, poured <strong>in</strong> soldiers, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

hope of exterm<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g this handful of warriors. The<br />

privations and hardships which <strong>the</strong>y endured were<br />

as great as <strong>the</strong> victories which <strong>the</strong>y won <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

daily skirmishes were marvellous. But though<br />

always conquer<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong>ir ranks were rapidly<br />
